Looking for a fun way to meet new people, enjoy good music and try something different? SonMambo Socials offers a welcoming space for Malaysians to discover salsa and Cuban dancing, regardless of their age or experience. Here are five reasons to give it a try.

1. A safe space for everyone

Stepping onto a dance floor for the first time can feel intimidating, especially for those who are shy, introverted or worried about not knowing the right moves. SonMambo aims to make that first step easier by creating a welcoming environment where people can dance at their own comfort level.

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced dancer, young or old, the emphasis is on enjoying the music, meeting people and having a good time. Its Social Dance Supporters (SDS) initiative also helps newcomers feel more comfortable by introducing them to other participants and inviting them to dance.

The community brings together people from different backgrounds, including dancers of different races and ages. The hope is to make salsa more accessible to Malaysians who may not have considered joining a social dance event before.

2. An affordable way to try something new

Trying a new hobby does not necessarily have to be expensive. With costs of around RM30 to RM40 for a dance class, salsa can be an accessible way to spend your leisure time while learning a skill and meeting people.

SonMambo’s philosophy is that the value of an experience is relative. Rather than spending that amount on an everyday indulgence, you could put it towards an activity that gets you moving, introduces you to new people and gives you an opportunity to explore a different culture.

More than simply learning dance steps, social dancing allows participants to practise what they know, discover new music and build confidence over time. It is an opportunity to invest in an experience that combines movement, music and community.

3. Daytime dancing without the pub or club scene

Not everyone feels comfortable attending a salsa social at a pub or club, particularly when events take place late at night. SonMambo offers an alternative through its daytime format, creating a more accessible setting for people who prefer to socialise and dance during the day.

The event is designed around music, smiles and good vibes rather than an alcohol-centred nightlife experience. It also gives people with family commitments or other reasons to avoid late-night outings another opportunity to participate in the salsa community.

According to its organisers, the intention is not to replace nighttime socials but to give more people a chance to enjoy dancing. By opening the doors to those who might otherwise stay away, SonMambo hopes to make the local salsa scene more inclusive.

4. Learn from experienced dancers and teachers

While SonMambo is primarily a social dancing event rather than a formal class, participants benefit from being part of a community supported by experienced dancers and teachers.

Organisers Jason Sirimanne and Fairuz Jamil, who lead First Move Dance PLT, have spent years teaching and participating in the salsa scene. Their experience informs the way SonMambo is organised, from creating a welcoming atmosphere to encouraging dancers of different skill levels to interact.

For newcomers, being around experienced dancers can be a valuable way to become more familiar with the music, movement and etiquette of social dancing. There is no need to arrive as an expert. Sometimes, the best way to gain confidence is simply to join the floor, enjoy a song and learn through the experience.

5. Be part of a community-driven movement

SonMambo is more than a series of dance events. It is the culmination of years of planning by its founders, Jason, Fairuz and Ashvini Pandian, who shared a vision of creating a dedicated space where salsa lovers could meet beyond their usual classes and circles.

With Ashvini currently away, Jason and Fairuz continue to manage and grow the initiative with support from dancers, friends and volunteers. The event also relies on collaboration with venue partners who share an interest in supporting the community.

SonMambo has held seven editions and is designed to take place approximately once every three months. Rather than expanding too quickly, the organisers want to build a stronger foundation by welcoming more newcomers and encouraging a healthy mix of beginners and experienced dancers.

The long-term ambition is to help Kuala Lumpur become recognised as an Asian destination for quality salsa and Cuban social dancing. That vision depends on the wider community coming together to support the scene.

For anyone curious about salsa, SonMambo offers a chance to experience the dance in a friendly environment, meet people from different walks of life and become part of something that is growing one song at a time.
