A Dinner to Remember at The River Cafe of the Casa Del Rio

By the tranquil banks of the Melaka River, Casa del Rio’s River Café offers more than just a meal—it offers a dining experience steeped in culture, creativity, and an appreciation for fresh, bold flavours. On a recent visit, I had the opportunity to sample some of their most celebrated dishes, including two brand-new additions that will make their debut this October under the aptly named Zesty Menu.

The evening began with a crowd-pleaser: the Smoked Salmon Pizza. Laden with Norwegian smoked salmon, cream cheese, mozzarella, parmesan, capers, onions, and Napoli sauce, the pizza was a symphony of saltiness and creaminess on a crisp base. It was indulgent yet refined, the kind of dish that easily wins over both seafood enthusiasts and pizza traditionalists.

Next came the first of the Zesty Menu’s creations: the Baked Seabass Fillet with Lemon and Potato Crust. The seabass, delicately baked and topped with a golden potato crust, arrived paired with confit cherry tomatoes and buttered vegetables, finished with a luxurious lemon butter sauce. It was an elegant presentation of flavours—fresh, tangy, and satisfyingly hearty—perfect for those who appreciate balance and finesse in a main course.

The Linguine Clam offered a rustic yet sophisticated Italian touch. Fresh clams were sautéed with mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, bird’s eye chilli, and Chinese parsley, tossed generously with linguine. The result was light, aromatic, and full of briny richness, lifted by just the right amount of spice.

The second highlight from the Zesty Menu was the Summer Pani Puri, an unexpected but delightful twist in the River Café’s repertoire. Originating from India, pani puri is a beloved street food traditionally made of crisp hollow shells filled with tangy, spicy, and sweet ingredients. Here, the café elevates the classic with coriander and tomato chutneys, chickpeas, onion, mango sauce, and yogurt. Each bite was a burst of textures and flavours—crunchy, zesty, refreshing—paying homage to its Indian roots while giving it a contemporary, global edge.

For a taste of homegrown heritage, the Asam Pedas stood tall as a reminder of Melaka’s culinary soul. The tamarind-chilli broth, enriched with daun kesum, confit cherry tomatoes, and sambal belacan, carried the unmistakable tangy heat that defines this dish. Served with salted egg and papadom, this version stayed true to tradition while presenting it with a touch of refinement. To dine on Asam Pedas in Melaka, by the river, felt like tasting the very essence of the city.

No menu is complete without a hearty classic, and the Beef Burger was just that. A homemade grilled prime beef patty stacked with fresh vegetables, cheddar, fried egg, and barbecue sauce, served with French fries and tartar dip—it was the definition of comfort food done right, generous and satisfying.

Dining at the River Café is more than just savouring dishes—it’s about experiencing the diversity and richness of flavours that reflect Melaka’s role as a historic crossroads of culture. With the introduction of the Zesty Menu this October, Casa del Rio invites diners to celebrate bold new creations alongside timeless favourites. Whether you’re drawn to the tang of Asam Pedas, the comforting indulgence of a burger, or the playful vibrancy of Summer Pani Puri, the River Café ensures that every meal by the river is one to remember.
