From March 31 to April 14, Christie’s presents New York Apple, a monumental work by Claude Lalanne, at Le Bristol Paris. The sculpture will go under the hammer on April 15 as part of the 20/21 Century Art Evening Sale, where it is set to be one of the highlights of Paris Marquee Week.

Temporarily installed in one of the capital’s most iconic palace hotels, New York Apple enters into dialogue with a site deeply rooted in Parisian cultural life. At Le Bristol Paris, this emblematic sculpture by Claude Lalanne, numbered 7/8 and dated 2008, finds a setting worthy of its scale (€5,000,000 – €7,000,000). Standing nearly 2.5 meters tall, it is the most monumental version ever created by the artist, embodying her distinctive poetic and organic language.

The apple has been a recurring motif in Lalanne’s work since the 1960s: from the early Pomme-Bouche to the Pomme Montre, and ultimately this New York iteration, it served as a fertile ground for experimentation—blending figuration, surrealism, and playful shifts in scale, from the intimate to the monumental. A testament to the growing recognition of the artist’s work, this sculpture is now among the standout lots of the April 15 evening sale dedicated to modern and contemporary art.

Accustomed to major public settings, New York Apple has previously been exhibited on Park Avenue in New York in 2010, at the Trianon on the grounds of the Château de Versailles in 2021, and more recently photographed at the Château de Chenonceau, where Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne held a major retrospective in 1991. Its presentation at Le Bristol Paris creates a unique encounter between a leading figure of design and one of the most refined venues on the Parisian scene.
