Rebranding is never an easy journey, especially for a homegrown brand that has been firmly rooted in the market for more than five decades. Yet for Malaysian footwear label Dr Cardin, change was necessary to ensure long-term growth and relevance in an ever-evolving fashion landscape. Determined to stand shoulder to shoulder with international names, the brand has embarked on a bold transformation to appeal to a new generation of consumers—particularly Gen Z.

Recently, Dr Cardin hosted an intimate appreciation gathering with members of the local media, social media influencers and loyal customers at Rumi House Moonkitaa. The event celebrated the strong support the brand has received over the years and featured a series of engaging activities, including a product craftsmanship showcase and a casual talk session with Dr Cardin’s Head of Branding, Chong Charl Yee.

One of the highlights of the afternoon was the relaxed conversation with Charl Yee, who shared insights into the brand’s rebranding journey and its rich history. According to him, many consumers have long assumed that Dr Cardin is an international label.

“It’s true—many people think Dr Cardin is a foreign brand. When they find out that it’s actually Malaysian, they’re often surprised,” he said. “Dr Cardin was founded by my grandfather more than 50 years ago and later taken over by my father in the 1990s. When my siblings and I joined the company, we decided to restructure the brand to suit the current generation, introducing e-commerce and more contemporary designs.”

Clarifying the origin of the brand name, Charl Yee explained that “Dr Cardin” does not refer to a real individual. Instead, the name is derived from the Italian word Cardin, which represents quality footwear, while “Dr” symbolises the brand’s role in solving customers’ footwear needs. “The name has no personal connection to my family,” he added.

With its refreshed, youthful aesthetic, Dr Cardin is now reaching beyond its traditional customer base. Charl Yee acknowledged that the brand was once most popular among older consumers. “Many people tell me they knew Dr Cardin through their grandparents or parents. It was a trusted brand for the older generation, but it wasn’t widely worn by Gen Z,” he said. “That’s why we decided to rebrand and introduce more modern, trendy collections.”

Today, Dr Cardin’s offerings have expanded far beyond classic black leather shoes. The brand now features a diverse range of products, from sneakers to handbags, available in a variety of appealing colours and designs. Over its 50-year history, Dr Cardin has also undergone seven logo changes, with its latest logo unveiled earlier this year. The new design features three oval shapes symbolising portals to different universes, reflecting the brand’s commitment to exploring fresh concepts each season.

Charl Yee also expressed his gratitude to local celebrities such as Amelia Henderson, Bella Astillah, Nadhir Nassar and YB Syed Saddiq for collaborating with Dr Cardin and helping to strengthen its presence in the market. “I’m especially thankful to Amelia for working with us during our rebranding phase. Despite frequently collaborating with international brands, she was open to supporting a local label like ours,” he shared. “Collaborations with figures like Nadhir, Bella and YB Syed Saddiq have helped elevate Dr Cardin’s profile, especially among younger consumers.”

This year has marked several milestones for the brand, including fashion shows and simultaneous TikTok live-streaming events held in a unique grocery store-themed setting. All collections showcased during the event sold out, including the Origin Heritage Sneakers Denim Series, Drift Ballet Sneakers, and the Era Bag and Dome Bag handbags.

Looking ahead to 2026, Dr Cardin has its sights set on an exciting festive collaboration. Charl Yee revealed that the brand will be teaming up with popular fashion label Bulan Bintang for a Raya collection. “Our main focus next year is the festive season. The Bulan Bintang collaboration will launch at the end of January 2026 and will feature a fresh face for the Raya campaign,” he said. “What makes this collection especially exciting is that we’ll be introducing our first high-heel designs.”

With its renewed vision, contemporary designs and strategic collaborations, Dr Cardin is steadily redefining itself—bridging heritage with modernity as it continues its journey onto the global stage.
