Imagine the Ramayana unfolding in a stage experience so vivid and accessible that every audience member can follow its emotional sweep. That is the promise of Ayodhya Putra, Mahavidya Dance Theatre’s upcoming Bharatanatyam production in Brickfields – an evening of beauty, drama and cultural richness that also supports free dance education for children from underprivileged families.

Set for 28 June 2026, the performance transforms the ancient tale of Prince Rama, Sita and the triumph of light over darkness into a theatrical experience that is grand, emotional and accessible. Through the intensity of the Vazhuvoor style of Bharatanatyam, audiences can expect an immersive journey shaped by expressive storytelling, digital screen with English sub-titles, intricate choreography and powerful live music.
More than an ancient India epic, the Ramayana remains deeply woven into Southeast Asian cultural identity, evolving into the Ramakien in Thailand, Kakawin Ramayana in Indonesia and Hikayat Seri Rama in Malaysia. Through themes of duty, sacrifice and self-discovery, it continues to resonate across cultures and generations.
The production is choreographed by Mahavidya Dance Theatre founder Sheela Raghavan and will also feature Suddha Nrittam, regarded as the pinnacle of “pure dance”, where performers move not to melody but to the intricate and thunderous patterns of live percussion. These passages are expected to be among the performance’s most electrifying moments, highlighting the dancer’s discipline, stamina and artistry.

Adding to the richness of the production is a distinguished live ensemble performing works by celebrated composers Papanasam Sivan and Nirmala Raghavan. The line-up features Brahmashri J.J. Prathap Sharma on mridangam; Aravind on percussion; Suganya Jegathesan Sharma on vocal, and Hariraam Tingyuan Lam on violin.
Beyond its artistic ambition, Ayodhya Putra also carries a meaningful social purpose. Mahavidya Dance Theatre conducts dance classes free of charge, especially for children from struggling and less privileged families. Public support for the performance will help sustain that mission and encourage the next generation of young dancers.
