2AM, a tech-fashion footwear brand, makes its Malaysian retail debut with the opening of its first standalone store at IOI City Mall.

Positioned at the intersection of fashion, technology and product innovation, 2AM arrives with a proposition that challenges conventional ideas of how footwear is designed, produced and experienced.

At its core is 3D-printing technology, giving the brand greater freedom to experiment with form, structure and functionality while enabling the use of recyclable materials and reducing material waste compared with traditional footwear production.

The Malaysian launch marks an important step for 2AM. Leading the local operation is Wong Kim Yoong, Head of Brand & Strategy, who oversees the brand’s overall direction while working closely with technology and manufacturing partners in China on technology and product development. Lee Wye-Ming, Head of Retail & Operations, leads the development and management of 2AM’s retail presence and day-to-day operations, while Jolene Phang, Head of Marketing, spearheads marketing, communications and brand engagement initiatives designed to build the brand’s presence and community in Malaysia.

Together, the team is focused on establishing 2AM as a distinct footwear and fashion proposition while introducing Malaysian consumers to the possibilities of 3D-printed footwear.

Where Fashion Meets Technology

Designed for consumers broadly aged between 22 and 55, 2AM speaks to a new generation of fashion and sneaker-conscious consumers who are equally interested in technology, design and product innovation.

The brand’s current audience has a leaning towards male consumers, alongside consumers with higher disposable income who are willing to invest in products offering a genuinely different experience.

For 2AM, the proposition extends beyond simply buying another pair of shoes. Its footwear introduces consumers to the possibilities of 3D-printing technology while maintaining the fundamentals expected of good footwear: comfort, durability and everyday wearability.

“Consumers today are increasingly interested not only in how a product looks, but also in how it is made, what technology sits behind it, and what possibilities that technology can create,” says the Malaysian team.

A Store Designed as an Experience

The choice of IOI City Mall for 2AM’s first Malaysian standalone store is deliberate. As one of Malaysia’s largest premium shopping destinations, the mall offers access to strong footfall and a consumer base aligned with the brand’s positioning.

But the store itself is designed to make a different statement. Rather than resemble a conventional footwear retailer filled with racks and hundreds of products, the space takes a more curated approach, with a limited selection presented almost like objects in an art gallery.

The intention is to give each product room to be appreciated while encouraging customers to discover the technology and design thinking behind the shoes. Premium, futuristic and experiential, the store is designed to make the act of discovering footwear as important as the transaction itself.

A First Look at the Future of Footwear

The official opening on 28 August brings together celebrities such as actor Azrel Ismail, KOLs and media for a preview of 2AM’s technology, products and brand experience.

2AM’s Malaysian expansion will continue with its second store at Sunway Pyramid, scheduled to open on 15 September. Beyond that, the brand is looking towards major A-list shopping destinations including Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, The Exchange TRX, Mid Valley, 1 Utama and KLCC. However, the strategy is purposely selective.

Rather than pursuing store numbers for their own sake, 2AM wants every location to contribute to its identity and create a meaningful connection with consumers. The brand also plans to build a community around 2AM through collaborations with local brands and creatives, participation in local events and deeper engagement with Malaysia’s fashion, art and creative sectors.

Longer term, technology could become an even greater part of the retail experience. While on-demand and personalised footwear are not currently offered, 2AM sees potential for future applications of 3D printing that could allow customers to explore personalised sizing, arch support and exterior design preferences.

Redefining the Footwear Category

The ambition extends beyond establishing another footwear label in Malaysia. Over the next three to five years, 2AM aims to become a leading name in 3D-printed footwear and fashion, while helping establish 3D-printed footwear as a category that consumers actively consider when choosing their next pair of shoes.

Beyond Malaysia, the brand’s five-year vision includes expansion into Southeast Asia and eventually Japan. Ultimately, 2AM wants to be recognised as a technology and footwear brand that happens to be strong in fashion — one that is helping rethink not only how shoes look, but how they are designed, produced and experienced.

With its first Malaysian store opening at IOI City Mall on 28 August, that future officially takes its first step.
